Short description of the Programme

The MA in North American Studies is a research-oriented degree program aimed at students dedicated to transdisciplinary work and intercultural exchange and interested in gaining expertise in North American culture, literature, politics, history and economics. The fully accredited two-year program with literary and cultural studies at its core offers you a unique variety of potential specializations, all made possible by cooperations with various institutes at the University of Bonn and the University of Cologne. Our MA program allows you to conduct original research for your MA thesis while undergoing systematic training in transdisciplinary scholarly work and debate in these areas:

  • North American literature and culture; theories of literary, cultural and media studies;
  • US and Canadian political systems, foreign policies; international politics; political theory and history of ideas;
  • US and Canadian micro- and macroeconomics;
  • History of North American societies, African-American history, gender history, and postcolonial studies.

Application criteria and programme-specific requirements

The Master’s Program in North America Studies is aimed at applicants who fulfill the following criteria:

Graduates of the University of Bonn and other universities in Germany or abroad who have earned a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: literary, cultural, media, or postcolonial studies; political science, economics, history, linguistics. Applicants for the M.A. in North America Studies must submit proof that they have acquired a minimum of 36 credit points in these areas while pursuing their first degree.

We accept applications from students who are about to finish one of the above mentioned degrees, as long as they have acquired a minimum of 132 credit points upon application. To be eligible for admission, applicants must be able to provide proof of receipt of their Bachelor’s degree by the 30th of September (winter term) or by the 31st of March (summer term).

We require a score in English language skills of at least 90 iBT / 232 CBT in the TOEFL; a minimum score of 6.5 in the ILTS; or, a Cambridge Certificate (CAE or CPE). We waive the formal language test for students with a B.A. degree in English or American studies or a degree in a subject entirely taught in English.

Also recommended is the knowledge of at least one other foreign language (particularly French or Spanish) corresponding to at least three years of High School education or the equivalent in a language and culture institution (CEF niveau A2)

A fair knowledge of the German language (DSH 1, TestDaf TDN 3, or a similar qualification) is also necessary. International students may apply before they take their language test, but need to provide proof of German language proficiency upon enrollment at the University of Bonn.
