Research

The research practice of the arts and humanities is different from that of the natural sciences. Our scientific approach is based on the notion of "unity in diversity" and accordingly a "differentiated excellence", as has been acknowledged in discussions in the German Council of Science and Humanities in rating procedures with a focus on the diversity of faculty and subject cultures.

The research excellence of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bonn is exemplified in the form of individual research programmes. Most of our professors are internationally renowned and highly respected scientists in their respective disciplines. The large number of visiting scientists and international specialist conferences and symposia in Bonn are one indicator of this success. Numerous leading journals and book series are edited by colleagues of the Faculty of Arts; several colleagues are chairpersons of their respective research associations, are international experts and shape their respective specialist cultures. Furthermore, the institutes and, above all, the research centres of the faculty represent important research networks and thus also enable the development of new interdisciplinary research identities.

In addition, the Faculty of Arts has for several years been pursuing a strategy of expanding collaborative research efforts. The Faculty of Arts supports initiatives to launch proposals for major research projects and to identify collaborative research priorities within the faculty that should be specifically promoted in the future. In this vein, the BMBF-funded Käte-Hamburger-Kolleg "Law as Culture" (since 2010), the DFG-funded Annemarie-Schimmel-Kolleg "Culture and History of the Mamluk Period 1250-1517" (since 2011) and the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre “Macht und Herrschaft" (since 2016) are exemplary projects of excellence of the research in our faculty.

Research Areas

In addition to the numerous individual research strengths in the Faculty of Arts, there are interdisciplinary areas that can be regarded as cornerstones of research in the faculty due to extensive past and current activities; these have contributed considerably to the high reputation of the Faculty of Arts. One area of excellence that is not as such a research focus of the entire Faculty of Arts, however, is research in the ethics of science. This research is represented by the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE) and the Institute for Science and Ethics (IWE), both of which closely cooperate with the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine work together.
