Prerequisites

A provisional pass certificate can only be issued if

  • your examiners confirm that you have passed the exams that have not yet been graded, and
  • this concerns the last pending exam in your degree program.

You must also

  • prove your legitimate interest (e.g., through a job application or planned employment at the university),
  • have earned at least 168 credit points (Bachelor’s degree) or 90 credit points (Master’s degree), and
  • your final thesis must already have been officially submitted by the deadline.

Procedure & important notes

The Examination Office does not proactively request certificates on your behalf. Please take note of the following procedure as well as the legal framework:

Application procedure

  1. Contact your examiners: Please ask your examiners to confirm that you have successfully passed your remaining exams. Please use this form to do so. In case your final thesis is concerned, both the first and second examiner must confirm that you have passed with a minimum grade of 4.0 (satisfactory).
  2. Submit supporting documentation: Please submit the signed form to the Examination Office via the contact form, requesting that a provisional pass certificate is issued for you.
  3. Processing: After the documents have been reviewed, you will receive your provisional pass certificate. Please note that the processing of your request may take up to four weeks, even though we strive to process your requests as quickly as possible.

Important information on grading & goodwill

  • No legal entitlement: There is no legal entitlement to receive a provisional pass certificate. The certificate is issued as a gesture of goodwill and subject to the examiners’ availability.
  • Grading deadlines: Please take note of the regular grading deadlines specified in the examination regulations (6 weeks for Bachelor’s theses and 8 weeks for Master’s theses). The Examination Office cannot accelerate the grading process in any way.
  • No disclosure of the grade: The certificate merely confirms that the student has passed the respective exam (with a grade of at least 4.0). It does not provide any information about the actual grade for the thesis or the overall grade for the degree.
